ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 Guide

Achieving and maintaining compliance with standards is an integral part of many companies’ environmental and energy management programs. The number of environmental standards and certifications is staggering, and their range is also expansive: from standards for entire energy and environmental management systems, to standards for buildings, appliances and equipment, products and materials. This Guide looks at at two wide-ranging standards that play an important role for environmental and energy managers: ISO 14001 for environmental management systems and ISO 50001 for energy management systems.

ANSI Accredits Energy Manager Certification

American Axle & Manufacturing HQ Certified

American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) World Headquarters in Detroit has earned ISO 50001 certification, the Wall Street Journal reports. This is AAM’s first facility to receive this certification. AAM has implemented sustainable energy management systems, completed a baseline of its energy use, and committed to continual improvement in energy performance.

SEEF Earns ISO 50001

Petrochemical company SEEF, which is partly owned by the Qatar government, has earned ISO 50001 energy management certification. The company is a leading producer of linear alkyl benzene in the region.

UK Department of Energy Earns ISO 50001

CICS has certified the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change to the ISO 50001 energy management standard.

Hyundai HI Certified to ISO 50001 at All Sites

Hyundai Heavy Industries has received ISO 50001 energy management certifications for all its facilities, from Norway DNV, with implementation of the standard at 12 facilities in November alone. The company says that the energy management system will save about 5 percent of its energy spend, or 10 billion won ($9.5 million).

TelecityGroup Certified to ISO 50001

Data center company TelecityGroup has achieved ISO 50001 energy management system certification for all its facilities in the UK and France. The company also has group-wide ISO 14001 certification for environmental management. Telecity plans to roll out ISO 50001 compliance across its entire data center portfolio over the next two years.

Mack Trucks Certified Superior Energy Performance Platinum

Mack Trucks’ Macungie Cab and Vehicle Assembly operation in Macungie, Penn., has become the first US manufacturing facility to receive platinum-level Superior Energy Performance certification, under the Mature Energy Pathway category, as well as ISO 50001 certification. The Mature category recognizes facilities that achieve aggressive energy improvements over a 10-year period.

SAI Global Assurance Accredited for ISO 50001

SAI Global Assurance Services is now an accredited certification body for the ISO 50001 energy management standard, one of only eight certification bodies in the world accredited for ISO 50001 by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB).

Keele University in Keele, UK announced that its energy management system is now ISO 50001 certified. Samsung Receives ISO 50001 Worldwide

Samsung Electronics has received ISO 50001 energy management certification for all sites worldwide. The company’s Gumi, South Korea site was the first to receive certification, in July 2011. Samsung has cut GHG emissions 57 percent since 2008, and plans further reductions by minimizing energy waste.
